How it works

Images are usually the heaviest part of a web page. Converting product photos and banners to WebP cuts that weight without a visible difference, and every current browser displays it.

A phone photo is around 12 million pixels, and a feed shows it about 1080 pixels wide. Most of what makes the file big is detail no one will ever see at that size. Resizing does far more than any quality setting: halving the width quarters the pixels.

Under the hood

The technical detail, for anyone who wants to know exactly what happens to their file. Each line first says it plainly.

The browser's own decoder

No engine to load.

The image is decoded by the browser (createImageBitmap), which already knows every format it can display, and redrawn on a canvas. That is why this tool is instant while the video tools need their engine first.

Longest-side scaling

Upright and sideways shrink alike.

The size you pick is applied to the longer edge, and the other edge follows, so proportions are kept exactly. An image already smaller than the target is left at its own size.

JPG and WebP quality

How much detail is traded for size.

Both are lossy: Smallest, Balanced and Best save at 60, 80 and 92% quality. At 80%, the difference from the original is very hard to see on a phone.

PNG

Lossless.

Every pixel kept exactly. Ideal for sharp edges and text; much larger than JPG for photographs.

Transparency

Why a JPG gets a white background.

JPG cannot store transparent areas. Without a background they would turn black, so the tool paints white behind the image first. WebP and PNG keep transparency as it is.

Privacy: your file stays on your computer

Photos carry faces, places and sometimes where they were taken. This one never even needs the video engine — your browser does it all, on your device.

Questions

Does every browser show WebP?

Every current one does, including Safari on iPhone.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser, using your own computer's memory. The file never leaves your device.

Which format should I use?

JPG for photos, WebP for websites (about a quarter smaller again), PNG for logos, screenshots and anything with transparency.

Can I compress iPhone HEIC photos?

Not in most browsers yet — they cannot open HEIC. On the iPhone, share the photo and save it as JPEG first, or set Camera › Formats to Most Compatible.

Will it make my image bigger?

No. Images are only ever scaled down, never stretched up.

Does it remove location data?

Redrawing the image on a canvas saves only the pixels, so the camera's embedded details — including location — are not carried into the new file.
